Goal: Learn how to choose the right hosting provider, set up hosting environments (shared, VPS, or cloud), manage control panels like cPanel or Plesk, and troubleshoot downtime or server issues.

Websites are hosted on a publicly accessible server. A website may need an entire server or share a server with hundreds of other websites. The storage space and its associated features comprise the hosting plan.

Choosing a Hosting plan is a balancing act between the price, features, and the website’s requirements.

Price: I always calculate the cost per website for a server. For servers like GoDaddy or Hostinger, you will need to figure out how many websites you can reasonably fit on a server (if they offer a number of websites in their advertisement, I would divide that by half). A website can take between 5 and 10 MB of storage space. The cost per website is stated for server providers like WPMU or Automattic.

Features: Some servers come with an easy install for a persistent object cache, which is preferable. Some require you to use their Name Server rather than changing the DNS records (Automattic). Some have a nice dashboard to monitor server activity, and some do not.

Website Requirements: The website size and the expected number of visits are considered. A small local church, for example, won’t require as many resources as a large e-commerce website.
